The following applies to all of the journals in the AGA portfolio:
Cover Submission FAQ
What are the dimensions the artwork fits into?
The art box sizes are different for each journal. Please use the following links to view each journals information and sample covers:
Which file types should I submit?
We can accept high resolution jpeg, .tiff, .psd (Photoshop), .pdf, or .ai (Illustrator) files.
Please do not embed images in other applications (such as Word or Powerpoint). If your image has text, arrows, or other markings, please be prepared to submit a version without these markings, or with the text or markings on a separate, editable layer, if requested.
Does my image need to be exactly the right size?
No, the specs on the following pages are provided for guidance. However, the Cover Design Team will do any cropping, formatting, and text placement needed to design the final cover.
Does my image need to come from my accepted manuscript?
Images do not necessarily need to be taken from your manuscript, but they should relate closely to your manuscript content.
Any figures published on the cover are subject to the same copyright and licensing arrangements as the figures within a manuscript. Please see each journal's specific copyright policy for more information.
I have an idea for a cover, but I have not yet submitted it. Can I work with an AGA Designer or Illustrator to help me realize this idea?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer services until covers are selected for publication. However, you are welcome to use stock art from our graphical abstract template for this purpose:
Can we work with our own illustrator to create a cover illustration?
You are welcome to work with your own illustrator. However, the illustrations must adhere to the AGA journal style. We reserve the right to modify and/or redraw any elements of the incoming artwork to adhere to our graphic standards.
If we work with our own illustrator, will the journal pay for the expense?
No, unfortunately, we do not pay for this expense.
Can we use stock images if we plan to purchase them?
If the stock images are high quality and fit the AGA journal style, and if the author has permission to use them, they can be used.
However, for authors submitting ideas, we advise to not purchase an image specifically for a proposed cover until we have reviewed the idea. We can review cover submissions with low-resolution draft versions of stock images. We will give the cover images the same consideration even if they have the proofing watermarks over them. Authors can purchase the images if their cover idea is chosen.
Is there a charge to me if my artwork is selected for the cover?
There is no charge to submit cover images or to have your work published on the cover.
Is there a limit to how many images we can submit?
You can submit up to five (5) images each time you send a cover submission.
Should I send you a full cover mockup of how I would like my proposed image to appear within the cover?
You do not need to create a full cover mockup for us; the Cover Design Team will take care of this if your cover is selected for publication. We advise that you send us just the image file, leaving plenty of room on the canvas ("bleed") around the main image. This is useful in case the Design Team needs to resize or reposition the artwork in the cover to accommodate text, page numbers, anniversary badges, and other design elements that may obscure parts of an image.
Should I provide a cover headline?
You are welcome to provide a cover headline if you wish. However, it is not necessary to do so when you submit an idea.
Please note, the AGA reserves the right to modify cover headlines as needed, for style and/or content.
Will I be notified if my cover is selected?
Yes, a member of the Publications staff will be in touch to notify you either way, whether or not your cover was selected for publication.
How can I get help if my questions weren't answered here?
